We don’t know why or how Abigail ended up in one of the many overcrowded shelters in Turkey. When we saw her she was nursing puppies who had lost their mother in a traffic accident. The puppies had been brought to the shelter and officials gave them to Abigail to save their lives. Our poor girl, had had her own puppies who were taken from her and dumped at a shelter. She still had her milk and so, without hesitation, Abigail accepted these poor motherless pups, and even gave a great pose with a smiling face for the camera. Maybe taking care of these babies gave Abigail something she had not experienced in a very long time, joy, if even for just a little while. When we saw that picture, we knew we had to rescue her and give her a great life here. We approached shelter officials and asked them to release to us this wonderful caring girl Abigail so we could give her the best life possible. They accepted our offer to rescue her, but asked that we wait until she finished nursing the orphaned pups. We heard nothing further but after 6 long months, when providing updates to the shelter staff about other dogs we had rescued from this same facility, we were told that our Abigail was still at the shelter, waiting for someone to adopt her. We were extremely upset to hear this news as we had offered to rescue her months prior, and by this time it was a brutal, cold January. From August 2016 to January 2017 no one contacted us about our Abigail and we thought she had been adopted. Once we learned she was in fact still at the shelter, we removed her right away and brought her to our clinic. Unfortunately, the news was not good…she was sick. Her body was so weak, she had mange, an ear infection, and she was anemic. Nursing multiple dogs and not getting proper food in a shelter could easily make her anemic. We knew that Abigail needed more than care from a clinic or boarding facility…she needed a temporary home where she could heal, and receive love and individual attention, so we had no choice but to bring her here under our care, otherwise we were going to lose our Abigail. She arrived grossly underweight. It is difficult to imagine, but Abigail was not fed adequately for a long time. After coming to us however, she gained 6.5 lbs in the first week. With our care, and supervision and oversight from our clinic here, Abigail is healing very well, inside and out. Now, a part of the KR family, Abigail finally knows what it is to be loved and nurtured, and she is so very happy. Our challenge is not only to rescue dogs but also to provide the best veterinary care and boarding facilities, with people that care about our dogs. Abigail was forgotten many times in her short life, by her owner, and sadly, even the shelter officials. But we did not forget her. After almost a year of hard work and determination, this poor soul is rescued forever. To love and care for an animal should be simple, uncomplicated and pure. WHAT AN HONOR IT IS TO TAKE SOMETHING SO FRAGILE AND OVERLOOKED AND GUIDE IT INTO THE LIGHT.
